Top Ten Reasons
Why I Won't be Voting for
I'm
not voting for To: The Republican Party, The Editor,
and anyone who will listen I am writing to explain why I won't be voting for any Republicans next Tuesday. I do this now, before the election and before the spinners foist their interpretation, win or lose on us. In the past I have voted for some Republicans, and who knows I might again. This time however I will not be voting for ANY Republican, and I want to make my reasons clear. My vote is meant as a rejection of the policies of George Bush and his parties whole scale support of those policies. Here are some of my specific concerns: Please click here to read top ten reasons. 1. Given what I know about 9/11, our response; the let up, non-capture, and seeming lack of interest in Bin Lauden followed by our invasion of Iraq. (which you never convinced me had anything to do with 9/11) was wrong and perhaps illegal. 2. I do believe that President Bush is either a liar or incompetent, and maybe both. The reasons for war, WMD's, Iraqi deals for yellowcake w/Africa. What are we doing in Iraq now? Is this president as Bob Woodward says in his book, in a 'State of Denial'? The presidential responses to what I see and hear are far from plausible and logical. I find myself with questions as to who actually was responsible for 9/11 and why it appears information is being hidden from us? The situation we find ourselves in is beginning to remind me of the lies we heard from Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon about Viet Nam. 3. I do not believe that our country should be acting unilaterally so often. The policy of not speaking to people we do not agree with is not one that I believe works toward improved relations and peace. Prime examples (in addition to Iraq) of the failure of not talking with adversaries include N.Korea and its recent nuclear test and Iran who yesterday tested long range missles. Perhaps by not talking and acting unilaterally rather than convincing them to adopt our demands we are giving them the feeling they must do what they can to protect themselves? 4. I don't believe it is wise to unilaterally break arms treaties or Geneva 'conventions' which our country along with the rest of the civilized world has committed to previously. 5. I do not believe that we should be torturing other human beings. I don't like that our current administration plays semantics about what is and is not torture, and what is acceptable. You may find some legal opinion that says it is ok to take someone to another country to torture them, but that is not my opinion and I will not give my vote to someone believes that. I find your actions, in my name despicable. I feel similarly about holding people (Including American citizens and the citizens of our allies) without charging them, hiding the real 'news' from American viewers while buying time on news shows to push your propeganda. 6. I was taught that our system of justice works, that after a fair trial the guilty go to jail and the innocent go free. I was taught that it is better to let 'ten guilty people go free than to incarcerate on innocent person'. Does that only go for white American males or does it go for everybody? I believe in the rule of law, I believe along with baseball and jazz it is one of the things that the United States might contribute to the world. Instead, I see my government parsing words, limiting freedoms when they should be showing the world a model for all to respect and follow. 7. I am not a tax and spend liberal, but I do believe that taxes are the cost of living in a civilized society. None of us got where we are on our own. I'm driving on roads built by my parents and grandparents, using electricity from a grid which was designed by an earlier generation too and they must be kept up to deal with our expanding population. The same for our educational and health systems. My father, a live free and die conservative, went to college and bought his house on the GI bill. These are legitimate uses of my tax money, killing more than 100,000 innocent women and children in my country's name for no apparent purpose, or for oil, or for ideology is not, in my opinion a legitimate or acceptable use of my money. 8. I do believe that global warming, caused in part by humans burning fossil fuel usage is currently occurring. Like other crisis faced by this government, this president is not even able to identify climate change as a problem, let alone attempt to do anything constructive to deal with it. This country could quite readily cut as much as 25% of our energy consumption and the associated climate change gasses while also taking a bit of pressure off the current high oil prices. 9. I do believe there is a connection between the seemingly isolated TV news segments which alternate between carnage abroad, and schools in need, empty food pantries with record length lines, increased numbers in homeless shelters at home. We are misusing the resources we have available to us, and our own kids are the ones who bear the social costs as well as the crippling future economic costs. 10. I do believe that it is the obligation of a Patriot to look critically at and question his government's actions. I resent being told if I am not with you, I am with the terrorists. I am not with either of you. You both represent the extremist philosophy that violence in support of ones ideals or religion (or oil?) is justifiable. There you have it, why I will not be voting for any Republicans this year. Actually, I've barely scratched the surface but lets call those my top ten reasons. My hope is for a fair election which sends a clear message to our current leaders rejecting their agenda and policies and leading to a government that shares more traditional American ideals. I hope you will join me in sending that message. | |
